The Positive Aspects of Young Caring

While research into young caring tends to focus on the "down side," there is much evidence to show that taking on a caring role in childhood has many benefits. These include the development of maturity, compassion, empathy, and practical knowledge about running a household. Young caring helps prepare youngsters for adulthood in significant ways. As these pictures show, young carers acknowledge that the caregiving role can be challenging, but it is worth it. Vanessa (above-left) helps to care for her older brother who has an acquired brain injury. They are very close. Brittney (above-right) takes a very philosophical and mature approach to her caregiving role. She helps to care for her dad, who has Alzheimer Disease.
